Opened in October 2009 Loca prides itself on bringing a real and authentic taste of Mexico to Dubai, pushing aside the ‘Tex-Mex fast-food’ label more typically associated with Mexican cuisine. The relaxed dining space was designed by Heinekan’s lead restaurant and bar designer in Holland – Ferry Tabeling. Exposed walls and rivoted iron girders give it an urban industrial feel complemented perfectly with solid wooden tables and chunky Chesterfield leather furnishings. A notable feature that can easily be attributed to the beer manufacturers are the table top beer taps enabling guests to pull their own chilled draughts of Heineken from the comfort of their seats. The informal pub-style vibe appeals to a cross section of international clientele and the venue has become a popular and trendy spot to drink, dine and watch live music or sport with friends.
The chef, originally from Mexico City itself, has curated a menu of award winning dishes that will appeal to all appetites. For a light bite with a drink or as a pre-dinner appetiser guests can pick from a selection of ceviche – made to order with kingfish, salmon or shrimp – or nachos topped with marinated Angus beef, shrimp or corn-fed adobo chicken and guacamole, pico de gallo and poblano pepper. Mains include a diverse selection of quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas and tacos al pastor with various meats, veg and seafood choices throughout. However for Loco’s signature dishes look no further than the Mexicanos Tradicionales list. We love the sound of Sabana – grilled beef tenderloin marinated in lime and salt with fresh leaves, asparagus and a coriander dressing, topped with queso fresca (Mexican feta-style cheese). The Tlacoyos de Frijol Negro is also a popular option – two handmade tortillas filled with chipotle black bean puree, Mexican cheese, tomatoes and sour cream.
Be sure to leave room for the Tres Leches dessert – a traditional three-milk cake served with a decadent chocolate ice cream!
