Asian Street By Thai brings authentic Thai food in one of Dubai’s rare, understated restaurants. At first glance, Asian Street By Thai is an unassuming space that has rejected the glitz and glamour of a standard Dubai eatery. As you walk in, you’re greeted by a basic table and chair set up, some wicker lamp shades hanging from the ceiling, and a view straight through to the kitchen where you can see the magic happen. With it being located on the basement level of the Jumeirah Lakes Towers, it also comes without a huge amount of natural light, or views overlooking the city. But it does bring the flavour, and that’s all that really matters.
This is a small family run restaurant that can seat less than 20 guests at a time, and a delivery option to make up for the sales. Seeming to believe that a small menu is a good menu, the choice here is brief, to the point, and reassuringly traditional. Expect to find soups, noodles, rice dishes, curries and salads amongst a variety of smaller plates. Among some of the house favourites are a chicken pad thai, naturally, as well as a Tom Yum Goong soup which is a spicy and sour soup with prawns, mushroom and Thai herbs. You can also expect classics like chicken satay, papaya salad which comes with a healthy portion of dried shrimp and panang curry.
The drinks menu, like many traditional Thai restaurants, is teetotal. Soft drinks are available such as Fanta and coke, as well as the less frequently seen lemon and honey or grape green tea, only further proving that Asian Street by Thai feels no pressure to succumb to the bottomless drink deals seen in the city’s usual haunts to entice customers, but rather lets the food speak for itself.
