The critically-acclaimed Copala restaurant is one of the best places in Dubai to sample top-tier Mexican food. Located in the bustling DIFC, the restaurant is furnished simply, almost canteen-style. The lighting is warm, the tables are intimate and the decor features the occasional splash of colour. The main event, however, is the food. Since Copala was started by three Mexicans who met in Dubai, it is truly authentic. The co-founders contribute their own culture and culinary heritage, and it shows. In fact, around 70% of the ingredients used are flown in directly from Mexico.
Don’t skip the starters here, as they are just as good as the rest of the menu. Try some avocado wedges, lightly battered in crispy tempura and served with a chipotle chilli dip, or the tlacoyos: homemade thick tortillas, filled with creamy Mexican ricotta, fresh cactus salad, pickled onion and tomatillo salsa. For something more familiar, there is also guacamole with corn tortilla chips for dipping.
After that, the real fun begins. Move on to the fan-favourite tuna prensado quesadillas, featuring crispy tuna marinated in Mexcian spices, sour cream, aged cheese and served with a green taqueria sauce. For another hit of seafood try the soft shell crab, served with mojo de ajo (traditional garlic butter with Mexican sea salt).
The main courses, however, give the greatest selection with ten stellar dishes to choose from, including al pastor salmon, grilled octopus, green mole, grilled whole red snapper and tacos dorados. Elsewhere you’ll find contrastingly simple sides such as refried beans, Mexican truffle rice and cheese with sauce.
Finally, be sure to finish with an authentic Mexican dessert, flavoured with either vanilla, pistachio, chocolate or caramel. Alternatively opt for churros, traditional rice pudding, Mexican flan or a mango smoothie. Other drinks include hibiscus and tamarind options as well as coffees, beers and affogato.
